Rene Rost Middle School, Kaplan LA Lache Pas French Culture Class

ANPP congratulates Rene Rost Middle School’s Lâche Pas French Culture Class in Vermilion Parish for their bronze-level certified habitat! Hannah Hebert's students are being introduced to native plants through their cultivation of pollinator plants. Students are learning about their culture by discovering what native plants their ancestors used for healing, cooking, and in decorations. The students are also learning about the conservation and preservation of plants, insects, and animal species. Project objectives are to provide native pollinators and other insects with a food source and to encourage the pollination of the plants themselves to produce seed.

L. J. Delcambre, owner of Cajun Native Plants (see Local Services below) and an active ANPP member, was asked to design the pollinator garden and provide native plants for the class project. Future plans for the class are to identify each plant using its scientific name and both French and English common names as well as highlighting the medicinal properties of each species. The class is looking forward to harvesting seeds from their plants, starting new plants from these seeds, and hosting a native plant sale to help support the class project.
