Little Bluestem, Schizachyrium scoparium, is an attractive native grass that is
easy to grow and makes a great addition to your landscape. It is a perennial
clumping grass that grows 2 to 3 feet tall with bluish green foliage. It does not
send out runners, but will slowly increase in width. As the plant increases in width,
it can be divided. It is found throughout North America. Little Bluestem makes
purplish seeds in the fall, and the foliage turns a golden brown. It loves the sun,
tolerates partial shade, is drought-tolerant, and can tolerate moist areas too. This
species has roots up to 8 feet deep and can be used for erosion control.
Little Bluestem provides seeds for small mammals and birds. This prairie grass is an
important plant that supports many insects. Female bumble bee queens nest at
the base of this plant. It supports the larvae of Ottoe Skipper, Indian
Skipper, Crossline Skipper, Dusted Skipper, and Cobweb butterfly. The leaves
provide nesting material for native bees. It is good forage for cattle and
horses.
Little Bluestem is easily propagated by seed. Splitbeard
Bluestem, Andropogon ternarius, is another perennial bluestem species that also
grows 2 to 3 feet tall. In the fall, its fluffy seedheads catch the sun.
