Lafayette Landscape Design new to Wild Ones Collection

Updated: 6 days ago

Dona Weifenbach's design selected for national collection

Wild Ones, a national nature advocacy group, has selected Sunset resident Dona Weifenbach to produce a landscape design for Lafayette LA using plant species native to our area. Dona is a local landscape professional and Past President of the Acadiana Native Plant Project.

Her design, now available at WildOnes.org, explains her rationale for plant choices that include trees, shrubs and wildflowers. "People who garden with natives tend to understand the relationship between the plants and wildlife. One native garden in a neighborhood becomes a small part of a larger whole. It becomes part of a wildlife corridor, a food source and shelter for resident and migrating pollinators and birds."

"Because of [frequent high water conditions], I chose to set my landscape design on a water body, a bayou. With the addition of extreme rainfall which has become the norm, there is a need for a change in our approach to the function of our landscapes. Deep rooted native plants help absorb more water and slow runoff into flooded drainage canals."

Her design for Lafayette is one of twenty designs now in the collection for cities across the US, and is the first for the Gulf South. Each design incorporates local plants in gardens for a standard US yard using a template plan.
