Ken Broussard celebrates his silver-level certification in Youngsville.
Ken moved home from New Mexico over 10 years ago onto a few acres of family land and got to work taming invasives and adding diversity. A Master Gardener, Ken is building on his knowledge of plants and ecology. He made paths through a large area he that he is revegetating with native shrubs from ANPP, Master Gardeners, All Seasons and others. Mature, high value oaks, hackberry and black cherry form a strong tree foundation, around which Ken has added many mints, mallows, beebalm, coneflowers and sages. He planted irises, lizards tail and buttonbush in low areas that receive the neighbors' rain runoff. He lost some water oaks and other trees in recent storms. Those, plus the Chinese privet he is removing, are left in neat brush piles that serve as wildlife shelter. His siblings on adjacent parcels support his rewilding efforts and have invited him to help improve their land too.
