Karen Tyrell celebrates her gold-level Louisiana Certified Habitat located in Lafayette Parish.
Karen has lived in this home in the charming Saints Streets area of Lafayette for 23 years. It was a typical older urban neighborhood with non-native azaleas and camellias and lots of lawn. She removed most of the azaleas, minimized the lawn and began planting more diversity. She was inspired by ANPP and Acadiana Master Naturalists and wanted to attract birds, butterflies, bees, and other insects with native plants, shelter, bird baths, and flowers for pollinators. Her yard is now filled with hummingbirds, other resident birds and migrants feasting on the caterpillars who thrive on native plants. Her yard is also certified by the National Wildlife Federation.
