Annette Parker celebrates her gold-level certification
in St. Landry Parish.
Annette wasted no time adding natives and building more gardens when she moved onto this small property in historic Washington four years ago. Less than half remains in lawn. A huge oak at the street provides shade for an understory with native ferns, magnolia and palmetto. Annette's experience as a rare plants botanist, avid gardener and long time Cajun Prairie Society leader shows: she kept her favorite exotics and added penstamons, coneflower, beebalms, including stunning nativars. Many of her plant choices are for attracting butterflies, a new hobby that has been contributing to iNaturalist's butterfly and other insect documentation. On one property line, she offered the bank next door to manage the steep fence line, now with tough native mints, mamou, frosted and ashy sunflower than can be heavily pruned in lieu of mowing and poisons.
