Acadian Odyssey Memorial Park in Loreauville - Bronze Louisiana Certified Habitat

The Loreauville Acadian Odyssey Monument Park is located at 119 Bridge St., Loreauville, LA. The property is owned by the Village of Loreauville and is situated on Bayou Teche adjacent to the bridge that crosses the bayou. The Village of Loreauville has worked with the Societe Nationale de l’Acadie (SNA) to receive this monument, one of 18 worldwide and the second in the United States. The LAOMP committee decided to plant natives around the monument and next to the bridge in order to return the space to its natural state with plants. They wanted the property to have plants that would have been there when the settlers would have found it. Placing native plants next to the bridge helped with hiding the bridge structure as well as the aesthetics of under the bridge. Natives planted were Purple Cone Flower, Lemon Bee Balm, Obedient Plant, Needle Leaf Mint, Rattle Snake Master, Texas Cone Flower, Bergamot, Yarrow, Lance Leaf Coreopsis, Lance Leaf Mint, Rosinweed, Black Eye Susan, Gulf Coast Penstemon, Palmetto, Abbeville Iris and Native verbena. There were enough native species in the park to earn bronze! The park is in the beginning stages of development. It includes a floating dock for boaters, the Acadian Odyssey Monument, Loreauville Jail, and native flower beds. In the works are a healing garden of native plants, pathways to different parts of the park as well as benches, and other memorial items. Special thanks to Cajun Native Plants for furnishing all plants for this site!
